3rd day
Mount Vernon was next for our history tour. We went to see George Washington's home.
Did you know that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson
were the only US Presidents to be born in Virginia?
me neither....
OK.... had to include this darling picture
of Alex waking up. She is always spot on perfect,
and for some reason loved the realness of this shot.
Here we are getting chummy with George and his family, until the tour guide said we were
showing disrespect by standing next to George, so he offered to take a picture with all of us standing behind the president..Good to know.
Here is where George and Martha resided.
Favorite part was the magnificent back porch that went on for days, with the most
excellent view of the river.
and then it rained...poured...drenched....soaking wet..
no problemo, we just went to the gift shop and bought hats, umbrellas and ponchos.
Next stop was to the Iwo Jima Statue near Arlington cemetery.
It's dedicated to all the US marines who died in battle.
Didn't know this, before hand, but because Mark has trouble getting around, we were able to tour the Arlington cemetery by car instead of walking.
So beyond sobering..... to view all the grave sites of faithful men and women who gave up their lives for our freedoms. Over 300,000 graves.
We saw the graves of President Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline and their son John.

Last but not least the Tomb of the unknown soldier.
It was so quiet and everyone showed the utmost respect.
